Reclaiming Sacred Heritage: Foundation Laid for the Grand Punaura Dham Sita Temple

On August 8th, Home Minister Amit Shah performed the Bhoomi Pujan (groundbreaking ceremony) for the construction of a grand temple dedicated to Mata Janaki (Goddess Sita) at Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi, Bihar. This site is revered as one of the most sacred and historic locations in the Mithila region. According to religious beliefs, it was here that King Janak discovered Sita as an infant in an earthen pot while ploughing the land.

This auspicious ceremony symbolised national unity, as soil and water from various sacred rivers and pilgrimage sites across the country were used.

A Historic Coincidence: Connecting Ayodhya and Punauradham

This monumental step marks a significant alignment of cultural and national priorities. It is an amazing coincidence that while Prime Minister Modi oversaw the construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, Home Minister Amit Shah laid the foundation for the temple at Mata Janaki’s birthplace in Punaura Dham.

This new complex, inspired by the architecture of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, will be developed at a cost of ₹890 crore. It is a major site within the government’s ambitious Ramayana Circuit initiative for tourism and regional development.

Vision for the Grand Temple Complex

The expansive complex will cover 67 acres and is designed to offer a complete spiritual and cultural experience:

  • A magnificent temple dedicated to Mata Janaki.
  • A Parikrama Path (circumambulation route) and a museum.
  • Development of sacred water bodies and the serene Sita Vatika.
  • Establishment of health facilities.
  • A 3D experience centre focusing on the life episodes of Mata Sita and Shri Ram.

The existing Janaki Temple is already a site of immense devotion, attracting thousands of devotees annually on occasions like Ram Navami and Sita Navami. The new development will undoubtedly elevate its global stature.

A Dedication to the Nation’s Matrishakti

Addressing the vast gathering of devotees, Home Minister Amit Shah underscored the historical importance of the moment. He emotionally remarked, “This is the sacred land where Raja Janak ploughed the golden field and where Mata Janaki manifested. The rain today is a blessing directly from Maa Sita herself.”

He declared that this holy site will be dedicated to the nation’s Matrishakti (Mother Power). The government is committed to developing all places associated with Mata Sita’s life—from her first meeting with Ram to the birthplace of Luv-Kush.

Mithila’s Culture: A National Treasure

The Home Minister highlighted the importance of Mithila’s culture, stating, “Mithila’s culture is not just a regional tradition; it is the proud heritage of the entire nation.”

Mata Sita embodied the ideal forms of a daughter, a wife, a mother, and a Queen Mother. This temple is a tribute not only to her but also to other great women scholars of ancient India, such as Maitreyi, Gargi, and Vidushi Bharati, symbolising the essence of Bihar Women Empowerment. Thousands of devotees gathered, witnessing this emotional and historical moment that celebrated both Mata Sita’s birthplace and the site of Ram and Janaki’s first meeting.

The grand construction of the Punaura Dham Sita Temple underscores the government’s commitment to cultural restoration and spiritual progress, solidifying India’s position as a guardian of its rich heritage and future potential.
